Located just beyond the Greater Toronto Area, Whitby is growing at a rapid rate. But its original small-town character is still remembered in the scale and materials of its Municipal Centre where red brick, wood trellises, large windows, and skylights convey a sense of informality and familiarity.
The Town's anticipated growth was a major factor in our design. Some years later, when the Town decided to build a recreation centre, we encouraged it to develop a master plan to ensure that, as facilities were added, the Centre's character would remain. The first phase of our master plan, a recreation complex, was completed in 1991. An internal street acts as an organizing device and provides straightforward easy access between the two components.
