Modern building with large glass windows and wooden panels at dusk, signage reads 'Place des Arts'.

On a once-vacant parking lot at Larch and Elgin Street, a three-storey facility now houses a 300-seat theatre, black box studio, art gallery, library and publishing house, boutique, bistro, daycare, and administrative spaces. The design engages the street with expressive façades that respond to the surrounding cityscape. Since opening in 2022, Place des Arts has increased community activity, strengthened the downtown core, and become a civic presence for Northern Ontario.

Sustainability strategies include a high-performance building enclosure, decoupled ventilation and thermal conditioning, energy recovery ventilators, and efficient LED lighting. Demand-controlled ventilation, optimized glazing, a deeply overhanging canopy, and durable Corten steel cladding enhance performance and comfort. The building achieves a 6.3 percent energy use reduction over the ASHRAE 90.1 2013 reference building, while reclaimed materials and shared spaces demonstrate that building less can energize more.
